Paatal Lok/The Underworld

Pataal Lok, The Netherworld, or The Underworld- it is called by many names, but it always induces an imagination full of scary creatures and devious monsters. Almost every civilization has references to such a world beneath the land. In Hinduism, Sage Narada describes Paatal as more beautiful than Swarg. It is said to be filled with jewels, sweet air, and demon maidens. The shining jewels dissipate the darkness beneath, and the temples, palaces, and monuments are built by Maya herself. There are many lokas in Patala, ruled by Nagas, Daityas and other demons. Beneath the Pataal, Hinduism believes is the Narak. Some also believe Pataal to be the abode of Shesha Naag.

Greek mythology referred to the Underworld as Hades after its patron God. It was considered a dark world where the good and bad souls were segregated. Even the ancient Egyptian talked about a realm of death and the God who resided in it. There are countless other references about the Netherworld in every religion and mythology. Illume also has the concept of the underworld, which similar to many civilizations, would at times stress on the good and the bad that resides in it.

In Illume-Verse, Pataal is derived from the word Pathala (Which is a piece of land), the abode of Danav. When the Almighty returned and had found his world in ruins, two volcanos, Mount Rudra and Mount Pralaya were created. The Paatal Lok of Illume is an immense underworld tunnel that connects these volcanoes. As Danav and the Asuras could not breathe in the free air beyond Pathala, Pataal Lok remained the only way to travel across Illume. Fearing their dominance, the Gods had placed many ancient but powerful creatures in the Pataal Lok to thwart the advances of the Asuras. (Click for the story of Illume.

During the Second War of Atara, the demons did find a way to defeat the creatures, but during most of the history of Illume, the Danavs could never find a way through the tunnel. This Underworld, even in Illume, captivates the minds of people. No one had dared to travel through it, and those who tried never returned. The books will cover a major story around it and will discuss in detail the mysteries, the mythological creatures and tribes, and the Demons who live underneath it. Who knows that some of our beloved deities could be slumbering peacefully in the tunnel! Join me to explore this beautiful world.
